The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot for Vernon-North Okanagan is in the news lately. This immigration program is easing requirements to let employers hire more people from December 1.
The first introduction of the pilot was in February 2020. Since then, it has received 21 applications out of which 19 were chosen.
The RNIP program for Vernon-North Okanagan initiated with conservative criteria. This was to ensure that the community can manage possible demand. The program is also easing some requirements that will allow the local economy of the community to grow.
What Are The Specific Changes?
- The big change to help employers hire more people is a decrease in the minimum permissible wage from $25 to $23 per hour.
- Those who have been studying, living, or working in the community for a minimum of six months, are exempt from this criteria. This shall be as long as their present wage falls between $18 and $22.99 per hour. They also need to score a minimum of 30 points in the point system of the community.
- There are point increases for candidates who have studied or worked in the community. Candidates with a minimum of six months of work experience shall receive 15 points instead of the previous 10 points. Those who have studied in the community for a minimum of two years in the period of the last five years will receive 10 points instead of 6 points.
- Those who have their immediate families in the community shall also receive more points. Candidates shall receive 3 points instead of two for each adult immediate family member. The adult immediate family member should be living in the community for a minimum of six months. The maximum number of points for every candidate from having immediate family members will be capped at nine instead of eight.
- Reductions will be there in the community’s criteria. Candidates will receive a maximum of 10 points, instead of 15, for any work experience outside the community. Changes have also been made to points awarded for a candidate’s age. Those who are below 25 years of age will benefit from this new change. Such candidates will receive three points instead of two.
