Facts about Alberta

  • Alberta is Canada’s fourth largest province. More than half the population in Alberta live in the two major cities, Edmonton and Calgary. Both cities are multicultural and well developed. Alberta is home to nearly 4 million people.
  • Alberta is Canada’s main producer of coal.it is also known as “The Energy Province”
  • On average, families in Alberta enjoy a higher annual income than the other provinces.
  • All citizens under age 20 have access to free education from kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • Like all other provinces and territories, universal, publicly funded health care is available to all citizens and legal residents of Canada. Services beyond the basic provisions are also available.
  • There are no provincial taxes (PST) in Alberta which provides a major cost-of-living advantage.
  • The province is very generous and has one of the highest charity donation rates in Canada.
  • Calgary is known for being one of the cleanest cities in the world. Calgary also has a low violent crime rate.
  • The West Edmonton Mall – Edmonton is the largest mall in North America with over 800 stores.
  • Alberta has around 245 rivers and more than 600 lakes.

Strategic Recruitment Stream

For persons working in a compulsory or optional trade in the province of Alberta.

Requirements:

  • You must intend to permanently live and work in Alberta
  • At the time of the application, you must be living in Alberta on a valid work permit
  • You must have either:
    1. An Alberta Qualification Certificate in a compulsory or optional trade, or
    2. An Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Recognized Trade Certificate in a compulsory or optional trade.
  • At the time of the application:
    1. You must be working in trade for an employer in Alberta
    2. Or have experience working in trades for an employer in Alberta for at least 6 months in the past 3 years.

Engineering Occupations Category

For engineers and designers working in a variety of fields

Post-Gradate Worker Category

Full-time students who live and have graduated from an eligible post secondary institution in Alberta.

Employer Driven Stream

Skilled Worker Category

For persons who have been offered a full-time permanent skilled occupation job by an Alberta employer.

Requirements for Employers:

  • You must be operating in Alberta. Your business must be registered or incorporated in Canada.
  • You must show that you made efforts to recruit within Canada before offering a job to the applicant
  • If required by the occupation, you must have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  • You must offer a job under the classified skill category
  • The job must meet Alberta’s employment and wage standards. The wage being offered must be consistent with industry standards.

Requirements for Applicants:

  • Must intend to work and live in Alberta permanently
  • Must be licensed, trained and have related work experience in order to work in Alberta
  • Have a valid work permit (if the applicant is currently working in Alberta)

Early childhood Educators or Childcare staff have additional requirements.

International Graduate Category

For full-time students who have recently graduated from an eligible Canadian postsecondary institution and have received a permanent full-time job offer from an employer in Alberta.

Requirements for Employers:

  • You must be operating in Alberta. Your business must be registered or incorporated in Canada.
  • You must offer a job under the classified skill category
  • The job must meet Alberta’s employment and wage standards. The wage being offered must be consistent with industry standards.

Requirements for Applicants:

  • Must intend to work and live in Alberta permanently.
  • Have a valid Post-Graduation Work Permit.
  • You must be working in Alberta as a full-time employee for the employer supporting your application. The occupation must be the same as the one listed on the application.
  • If required by the occupation, you must submit language test score results.

Semi-Skilled Worker Category

For temporary foreign workers who have been offered a permanent full-time semi-skilled job by an employer in Alberta.

Industries eligible under this category:

  1. Food and Beverage Processing
  2. Hotel and Lodging
  3. Manufacturing
  4. Long-Haul Trucking
  5. Food Services

Requirements for Employers:

  • You must be operating in Alberta. Your business must be registered or incorporated in Canada.
  • You must be operating on one of the eligible industries listed above.
  • You must offer a permanent full-time job
  • The job must meet Alberta’s employment and wage standards. The wage being offered must be consistent with industry standards.
  • Provide with a settlement and retention plan for the individual applicant.
  • If required by the occupation, you must have a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)

Requirements for Applicants:

  • You must at least have a high school diploma. (High School level education)
  • You must submit language test results
  • Meet the industry criteria
  • You must currently be working in an eligible occupation for an employer in Alberta on a valid work permit.

Self-Employed Farmer Stream

Requirements:

Self-Employed farmers must prove the following:

  • Farm management skills
  • Sufficient financial resources
  • Intend to invest in Alberta’s farming business.
