Canada invited 654 Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent residence on February 10, 2021.
Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invited candidates who scored 720 and above.
In the latest draw, invited candidates were those who received nominations from a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
This is the reason why the cut-off of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) was set high. Candidates who received nominations from Express Entry PNPs get 600 points on their overall score.
As of 11th February, the CRS score ranked 21 points lower than the previous PNP-specific invitation round of 20th January.
Express Entry is the country’s application management system spanning the following federal immigration programs: Federal Skilled Trades Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Worker Program.
Candidates enrolled in any of these programs and some PNPs are allotted a score on their CRS. These scores are based on human capital factors like work experience, age, education, and language ability (English or French).
The points can be awarded to either a couple or an individual. Express Entry candidates do not need to have any experience in Canada to be invited for permanent residence application. They don’t need a job offer, but extra points may help them.
The candidates who score the highest receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence via Express Entry invitations. Once applications are submitted, IRCC will make a decision. On acceptance, it will send a Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
The final step is to settle in Canada and then, apply for a PR Card. At this stage, individuals are immigrated to Canada and may apply for citizenship.
If there is a tie, IRCC will apply the tie-breaking rule. During the latest draw, candidates who scored 720 or more on CRS submitted their Express Entry profiles before 14 August 2020. Only those who did receive invitations.
Despite the pandemic, for Express Entry, 2020 was a record-breaking year. By the end, Canada issued about 108,350 ITAs for its Express Entry candidates.
2021 is expected to be bigger. This is because IRCC has increased the immigration targets. They have done this to compensate for the dropped number of permanent residents that were admitted in 2020.
IRCC has issued 10,654 ITAs via four program-specific draws for 2021.
In 2021, we are expected to observe increases as IRCC has extended immigration targets to compensate for the reduced number of permanent residents who got admitted to Canada in 2020.
IRCC is also likely to place reliance on potential skilled workers and immigrants in Canada to meet these targets, in part due to the ongoing coronavirus measures and the challenges associated with border restrictions and closure.
In 2021 so far, IRCC has not conducted an all-program draw.
Canada may be welcoming almost 401,000 new immigrants in 2021. Of these, about 108,500 are expected to come via an Express Entry-managed program. The targets are expected to go up in the coming years. The numbers are projected to go up to 110,500 in 2022 and almost 113,750 in 2023.
