IRCC had made this big announcement in late-September. In its announcement, it also said the way they wish to bring loved ones together as soon as possible in this global pandemic situation.
Right before the pandemic, Canada had a target of inviting around 70,000 newcomers each year. This was under their spousal, partner, and children’s family class immigration category.
They recently made a new announcement about their new 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan. According to this plan, the number of newcomers is set to rise in the days to come.
Due to this, Canada aims at welcoming around 80,000 immigrants every year under the same category. The majority of these newcomers will be arriving under spousal sponsorship.
Who Can Sponsor Their Partner For Canadian Immigration?
Booth permanent residents and citizens of Canada can sponsor their partners to get permanent residence.
Both the sponsor and the person they wish to sponsor need to show IRCC that they share a relationship under one of the below categories:

- Prove that they are not receiving any social assistance apart from a disability
- Should demonstrate that the sponsor can financially provide for all your basic needs
If the sponsor is a Canadian but resides outside Canada, he needs to prove that he intends to live in the country with the person whom he wishes to sponsor.

The person whom you wish to sponsor should meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Spouse: Must be legally married to you and should be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Common-Law Partner: Should be a minimum of 18 years of age and must have lived with you for consecutive 12 months.
