15,000 More Newcomers Welcomed By Canada in October

In October 2020 Canada welcomed another 15,000 new immigrants. This is about the same number that the country welcomed in September 2020.

The new IRCC data reveals that October was the second biggest month for newcomers arriving in Canada. This is since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, the immigration levels of Canada remain quite low due to the global pandemic. Before the pandemic, Canada used to welcome around 25,000 to 35,000 immigrants every month.

In October 2019, around 31,000 newcomers were welcomed by Canada. This means that immigration was cut to half on a year-over-year basis.

The first 10 months of 2020 saw Canada welcoming around 158,600 immigrants. This strongly suggests that the nation will fall short by 200,000 newcomers by the year-end. This will be the first time that Canada will fall short of newcomers since 1999.

Last year, Canada welcomed more than 341,000 immigrants. It was targeting to do the same this year before the stroke of the pandemic.

The biggest month since the pandemic was June when Canada allowed 19,100 newcomers.

Low immigration in Canada is due to the chaos caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is also due to challenges in confirmation of permanent residence holders arriving in Canada and the nation’s travel restrictions.

In spite of the recent pandemic, Canada aims to welcome high numbers of new permanent residents in the next few years.

On October 30, 2020, Canada made an announcement. The announcement stated that high levels of new PR will compensate for the decline in levels of immigration due to the pandemic.

The new 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan will help Canada aim at welcoming more than 400,000 newcomers each year. This will be the highest target in the history of the nation.

EE draws happen regularly in Canada. Last week, the country surpassed 100,000 EE immigration invitations. This is the first time for Canada.

EE is the primary pathway for Canada to manage skilled worker immigration applications.

Time will tell whether Canada’s 2021 immigration target is achievable. This doubt linger in the mind due to the ongoing Covid-19 disruptions.

Thankfully, help is on its way. Health Canada approved a Covid-19 vaccine last week. Canadians are all set to receive their vaccinations today.

The Covid-19 cases in Canada have gone up at an alarming rate. This is why new lockdowns in cities like Toronto was implemented.

On the other hand, Canada has bagged the highest number of Covid-19 vaccines per capita in the entire world. This is because the nation aims to bring a complete halt to the rise of the Covid-19 cases. It will soon start the largest vaccination campaign in its own history.

The large scale vaccination of Canadians and abroad will allow the government of Canada to somewhat relax its travel restrictions. They will also witness the immigration levels of the nation coming back to normal.

In the meantime, IRCC continues to accept and even process new applications for immigration.
