A recent study reveals that Canadians are happy to have immigrants in their country. This was not the case in the past.
Canadian citizens have become comfortable with the present immigration levels. They are of the opinion that immigrants are good for the economy of Canada.
Canadians believe that immigrants are no longer a threat to Canadian jobs. They say that it helps to boost the population of the country as well.
All of these findings are the result of a recent public opinion survey organized by Environics Institute. It is a non-profit group and promotes original social research on topics of social change and public policy.
Telephonic interviews with 2,000 Canadians were the base of the survey. This survey happened between September 8, 2020, and September 23, 2020.
According to the report, the results are precise to within +2.2% and -2.2% points in 19 out of a total of 20 samples.
The survey reveals that many Canadians reject the idea of immigration. They are of the opinion that many immigrants are not legitimate. They also say that immigrants fail to adopt Canadian values.
According to the survey, Canadians feel that immigration helps to make the country a better place. Those who believe so outnumbered those against the concept by a five-to-one margin.
The reason behind the Canadians to believe in favor of immigration is because it helps the country become a more multicultural and diverse place to live.
Immigration Level Are Quite High: Disagree Most Canadians
66% of Canadians reject the notion that levels of immigration are too high. This figure is up by 3% compared to similar data same time last year. It is at an all-time high since 1977.
Every segment of the Canadian population is becoming more positive towards the immigration levels. This shift in opinion is highly noticeable amongst people with low household incomes, Albertans, and first-generation Canadians.
Positive perspectives on immigration levels are most common in Atlantic Canada. It can also be seen among educated Canadians with high levels of income.
According to this survey, it can be said that there is a little gap in public opinion by age. This is because 66% of them with ages between 18 and 24 years disagree upon the immigration levels being too high. This number is down by 7%.
At the same time, 67% Canadians aged a minimum of 45 years disagree with the fact. This number has risen by 8%.
Half the Canadian Population In Favor Of Immigration for Population Growth
More than 56% of the total respondents are in favor of immigration to boost Canadian population. At the same time, 36% are not in favor of this statement and almost 7% are unsure.
These opinions are in agreement with the opinions on present immigration levels. Close to 70% of Atlantic Canadians agree with the statement. These include:
- 66% of high-income and educated Canadians
- 71% of first-generation Canadians
- 66% of radicalized people
- 67% of Federal Liberal Party supporters
- 64% of NDP supporters
Most Canadians Believe Immigration Is Good For the National Economy
Close to 84% Canadians agree that immigration is always positive for the country’s economy. This has increased by four points since October 2019. It is also the highest noted level since 1993.
On top of that, close to 78% Canadians are not in favor of the statement that immigrants are a threat to Canadian jobs.
According to the survey, the sole reason behind the rising support for immigration may be due to the recent pandemic.
The rising support may also be due to the political instability in the US. 71% Canadians support the idea of Canada inviting skilled labor, who are not allowed to enter the US.
