There is an update in the list of approved Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs). These DLIs have permission to welcome foreign students during the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
A DLI is a university, college, or school that has permission to host foreign students. To control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, Canada had earlier come up with travel restrictions on non-essential travel.
Foreign students were the first to face travel restrictions. Those who had approval or a study permit issued on or before March 18 were given the permission to enter Canada.
Canada recently started easing travel restrictions to let more foreign students pursue their education.
It is important for institutions to have a Covid-19 readiness plan. This plan needs to get the approval of the territorial or provincial government. After this, they can see their names on the list of approved DLIs.
Students enrolled in approved DLIs are exempt from Canada’s travel restrictions. It is also likely for them to be allowed entry into Canada by a border official.
There are several well-known Ontario-based academic institutions recently added to the list. These include:
- Ryerson University
- The University of Waterloo
- University of Windsor
- OCAD University
Every person entering Canada, including global students, have to quarantine themselves for 14 days upon the arrival. This is a requirement by the law. It means that you need to stay indoors all the time. You may have to pay hefty fines if you fail to do so.
Additionally, air travelers to Canada will have to install the ArriveCAN mobile application. You will have to submit your contact and travel details, your daily Covid-19 symptom self-assessment, and your quarantine plan.
A proper quarantine plan will include where you plan to quarantine yourself. It will also include the way you plan on obtaining daily necessary items such as medicines and groceries.
Reduction in International Enrollment
There are many Canadian universities that have seen a rise in domestic enrolment. At the same time, they have seen a drop in foreign enrolment. These universities are spread across the country, including BC and Ontario.
This data is according to a study conducted by CourseCompare. It is a platform that helps to connect students to various training programs and courses.
Not every university saw a similar pattern. There are certainly some exceptions to it all. An example would be UBC Okanagan. They saw a 9% rise in foreign undergraduate enrolment.
On average, the study shows a 9% decrease in international enrolment across the nation. This figure is based on official numbers by more than 50 academic institutions in Canada.
There is one possible explanation behind this data. Several Canadian universities and colleges are planning to extend their online education to the next semester.
Some students, especially global students who pay pretty high tuition fees, may be unwilling to enroll. This is until classes return to being on-campus.
Additionally, many foreign students are registered for more practical programs. These include nursing, acting, and lab-dependent programs, like film production and electrical engineering.
These programs are said to be negatively impacted as presenting courses online is pretty challenging. As an alternative, students can present the courses on-campus by following physical distancing procedures. There are some cases wherein courses can also be completely suspended.
Universities and colleges in parts of Canada, such as Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and BC, saw a rise in domestic student enrolments. Most of these students are adult learners.
