It is now mandatory for immigrants entering Canada to produce a negative Covid-19 test. They need to produce the test results three days before their arrival.
The test needs to be a PCR test. It is said to be the most effective test for viral infection.
Additionally, there are will be more border officials at the various ports of entry of Canada. They will ensure that immigrants understand the rules.
The Public Health Minister, Bill Blair, made the announcement about this rule. He also made it clear that this does not replace the 14-day quarantine requirement.
The details of this new rule are still under process. It should be available next week.
According to Canadian law, immigrants to the country need to quarantine themselves for 14 days upon the arrival. This requires them to remain indoors all the time and have a proper plan to obtain their daily medicines, foods, and other groceries.
Those found to break this rule will have to pay a penalty of either six months in prison or a maximum CAD of $750,000 in fines.
Nonetheless, there are some travelers who are exempt from the quarantine rule. However, they need to obtain approval from the Canadian government before traveling to Canada.
Normally, this is mainly for compassionate reasons. This may include spending time with a loved one during the last few days of their lives or attending a funeral.
The new rule was due to the request made by the health minister of Quebec, Christian Dube, to the federal authorities. He requested them to intensify the Covid-19 screening process of all the immigrants entering Canada. Quebec had to previously close all non-essential stores to stop the spread of the virus.
It is in answer to the sudden rise of Covid-19 cases in Canada. As the winter season started in Canada, the number of Covid-19 started increasing.
As of December 29, more than 550,000 cases got reported across the nation.
There has been a start to the administration of the Covid-19 vaccines in Canada this month. This was when the country received its first batch of the Pfizer vaccine.
Canada is going to receive the Moderna vaccine sometime in the near future.
As of now, more than 70,000 Pfizer vaccines have been administered in Canada. This is as per the vaccine tracker that was created by a student from the University of Saskatchewan. The tracker is based on provincial updates.
