This is per the results of several studies that were conducted by the site educations.com, to help us better understand the opinions of prospective and existing students when it comes to international education.
Surveys suggest that the students are not really more enthusiastic to study neither in any Canadian institution nor in the UK destinations than what was before, instead, it is the US and the rapid decrease in its popularity that has driven the country to, unfortunately, lose the top spot.
Back in January 2018, we see that the US was the most favored study destination for students. It then began dropping and became the third-most-popular country in October last year.
The decrease in student interest was constant during this period. Such results suggest that it’s not just a particular event that compelled them to not choose the US. By incidents or events, we refer to situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both Canada and the UK witnessed an increase in popularity among the students. From 2018 (January) and 2020 (October), the percentage of those who participated in the survey had selected the UK as the preferred destination increased from 12.7% to nearly 15%. During the same period, Canada also witnessed an increase from 10.1 percent to 13.8 percent.
On the other hand, the US experienced an incremental decrease. It was 21.6% which fell to 10.7%. Germany was fourth and Australia in the fifth position. Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, and Sweden were in the remaining top 10 positions.

Post-study Opportunities Play a Role in Country Choice
Options to stay back in the country after graduation is an important factor when it comes to choosing a country to study. This is possibly one of the reasons why the US has become comparatively less popular, as the US has stringent visa policies for its international graduates.
Canada is a much more welcoming country. All graduates get the option that allows them to apply for their Work Permit (Post-Graduate), an open-work license that permits fresh graduates to work for an employer of their choice.
Some of the most important factors that play a crucial role in deciding which country is more feasible to study in include cost of living, language, and culture. Other than these, the safety element and socio-political climate along with the reputation of the education system are important factors. These are usually the top five factors that determine any country’s popularity.
The post-study options in Canada have increased over the past few years. It ranked ninth in terms of importance in 2018, but now, it has jumped to the third position.
