The rate of population growth of Canada come to an absolute stop between July 1 and September 30, 2020. There was a net increase in Canada’s population of just 2,767 people.
This is the slowest ever recorded growth by Canada since 1946 when national quarterly data became available. This data is as per the quarterly demographic estimates. Statistics Canada releases these estimates.
The slow growth rate is mainly due to the negative net foreign migration. This concludes that the number of people leaving Canada is higher than those moving in the country.
The population of Canada rose by almost 70,000 during the first quarter of 2020. This increase is from the net foreign migration. During the same period, the population also grew naturally by almost 10,000. This data is due to the difference between births and deaths.
The population increased so much because during that time the travel restrictions were not in effect. These restrictions proved to be a major hurdle in the rapidly growing population growth of the country.
Due to these restrictions, the country’s population grew by barely 10,000 from net foreign migration. This was during the second quarter of last year. During the same period, it grew by around 15,000 naturally.
The Canadian population continued to slow down from foreign migration. During the third quarter of 2020, the net increase in population from foreign migration was -27,143.
This was also the biggest hit to the population growth of the country since 1946.
In spite of this poor data, Canada welcomed almost 40,069 newcomers during the third quarter of 2020. This is way higher than the second quarter when the same number was 34,271.
The sharp drop in the net number of non-permanent resident migration gave a huge impact on their population growth. A large number of non-permanent residents are expected every third quarter.
Simply because this is when it is expected that global students will commence their academic year. Nonetheless, due to restrictions in the border area and several educational programs being shifted online, many students were either unwilling or unable to move to Canada.
This slow population growth means that the country will now largely depend on immigration. This dependency will be more than ever before due to Canada’s post-pandemic economic recovery.
In spite of the recent global pandemic, IRCC is still going on processing PR applications. This proves the need of the country when it comes to attracting and retaining suitable highly skilled candidates. They will prove to be important for the economic recovery of Canada.
Before the pandemic, Canada did depend a lot on its immigrants for its economic growth. This is why Canada wanted to welcome more and more immigrants and permanent residents every year.
The simple reason behind this is the aging population of the country. This leads to labor shortages across the entire nation. The recent pandemic together with the slow growth in population simply amplified the need to boost their immigration process.
