Canada Approves Covid-19 Vaccine While Increasing Immigration Levels

Health Canada made its first approval towards a Covid-19 vaccine on December 9, 2020.

This signifies that Canada now has the go-ahead signal to start its largest vaccination campaign in the history of the country.

Canada gave its approval to the Covid-19 vaccine that was developed by BioNTech Manufacturing and Pfizer.

Health Canada made a public release stating “the approval of the vaccine is supported by evidence that it is safe, effective and of good quality.”

There are several terms and conditions by Health Canada on Pfizer and BioNTech that include:

  1. Safety monitoring reports every month that will contain information about possible side effects
  2. Additional data on the potency and safety of the vaccine. This will include final data from proceeding clinical trials
  3. Additional quality data that will confirm the controls and processes ready to ensure the production of high-quality vaccines

According to CBC, Canada is the third country in the world to approve a Covid-19 vaccine. It is after the UK and Bahrain.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, states in a tweet that 30,000 doses of the vaccine will arrive in the country by this Monday. Another batch of 249,000 doses will arrive by the end of this year. Millions of this vaccine will arrive in Canada in early 2021.

When it comes to securing the number of Covid-19 vaccines on a per capita basis, Canada leads the list. In general, they have signed contracts with 7 different companies. Canada has also secured 414 million doses of vaccines.

Review for approval by Health Canada is in the process for three other vaccine manufacturers.

Canada recently tasted success in its attempt at trying to flatten the Covid-19 curve during the summer. However, the number of cases has risen across the nation ever since. This gave rise to a fresh wave of lockdowns.

During this recent pandemic, Canada saw more than 430,000 Covid-19 cases and around 13,000 deaths.

The immigration system of Canada was functioning throughout the pandemic. This was because the country was planning to get its immigration levels back on track after the pandemic.

On December 9, 2020, another major EE draw was held inviting 5000 candidates to apply for the PR status. This year was the first time Canada has sent out invitations to more than 100,000 EE candidates. This was since the launch of EE in 2015.

Canada made an announcement in late October about its 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan. It aims to welcome more than 400,000 immigrants each year in the future. This will be in a stated effort to fulfill the deficiencies in the number of immigrant arrivals during this pandemic.

Canada is pursuing the policy of higher immigration to support the economic growth of the country. This is in light of the aging Canadian population and equally low birth rate.
