Canada-US Border to Remain Closed For another 30 Days

Canada took a decision to continue with its travel restrictions on US travelers. The Canada-US border will be off-limits for US travelers till December 21.

The confirmation of this news was made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Public Safety Minister Bill Blair. There will be an update to the new Order in Council.

This will be regarding the continuation of travel restrictions for another 30 days. US travelers will be barred from entering Canada for shopping, tourism or entertainment.

Travelers willing to enter Canada from the US need to be exempt from travel restrictions. They may also be arriving for a non-optional, non-discretionary reason.

It is important for most of the travelers to carry out the compulsory 14-day quarantine period upon arrival.

The main exemptions to the travel restrictions include Canadian citizens, permanent residents, approved permanent residents from the US, and immediate family members.

Canada has relaxed the travel restrictions since it was introduced in March 2020. Extended family members of Canadians and permanent residents have to stay for at least 15 days. If not then they will not be let to cross the border.

Extended family members include grandchildren, grandparents, non-dependent children, siblings, and specific dating partners.

Foreign students are also exempt from travel restrictions. The only condition to this rule is they will have to go to a Designated Learning Institution with a government-approved Covid-19-readiness plan.

A guide for global students traveling to Canada during the pandemic was made public. This guide release took place during the earlier part of this month.

It is also possible to enter Canada on humane grounds. This may include taking care of sick loved ones, for a funeral, or to visit someone in the final moments of their lives. Such travelers may apply to get the exemption from travel restrictions.

Travelers visiting Alberta may also apply for shorter quarantine periods. This is possible if their Covid-19 test results are negative.

Other travelers who are not exempt from the mandatory quarantine period will have to self-isolate for 14 days.

It is also important for them to have a proper quarantine plan to cross the border. However, it is the border officials who will have the final say on who can enter Canada and who cannot do so.

Compared to last year, there has been a drop of 80% inland border crossings. This is as per the weekly traveler statistics of the Canada Border Services Agency.

This data is for the period between November 9 and November 15. The majority of the drop is in non-commercial travel.
