The majority of the citizens of Canada wish to see the temporary workers become PR holders. These workers are mostly in the agricultural sector. This is as per a new survey result.
Nanos Research held a random survey of 1,039 Canadians above the age of 18 years. This is a market and public opinion research firm ad the survey was held between October 28 and November 1.
According to the results, more than 80% of Canadians are in support of a permanent immigration program. This program should be for temporary foreign workers to remain in the country.
The support for this program is strongest among Atlantic Provinces and weakest in the Prairie Provinces.
Most Canadians agree that temporary foreign workers are crucial for the agricultural sector of Canada. They should be given the same protections and benefits as any other worker. People in BC were most eager to share these views.
According to the survey, more than 8 in 10 Canadians also feel that various federal programs have a positive impact on Canadian agriculture. These programs include the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
The agriculture sector is a crucial contributor to Canada’s economy. Close to 97% of candidates agree to this fact.
Participants were recruited randomly by telephone using real people and managed a survey online. This survey has a margin of error ranging from -3.1% to +3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
Immigration Minister Signals More Pathways for Temporary Residents
Marco Mendicino, the minister of immigration for Canada, mentioned that the federal government is looking for a way to provide temporary residents with more opportunities to become PR holders.
It is not much known about these pathways or opportunities. Nonetheless, Mendicino has hinted that these will focus on workers who contribute to essential parts of the economy.
This is especially for those people who work in occupations that have urgent needs for manpower. These include:
- Pharmacists
- Nurses
- Doctors
- Support workers
Various steps are taken to ensure Covid-19 safety, like travel restrictions, have reduced immigration to Canada. IRCC’s strategy for immigration intake during the pandemic was to prioritize applicants already in Canada.
The federal government is planning to increase immigration targets to more than 401,000 new PR holders next year and almost 1.2 million within the next three years.
Canada has a pathway to permanent residence for some agriculture workers. This is mostly through Agri-Food Immigration Pilot.
This pilot program is for those who are working in mushroom and greenhouse production, as well as meat processing and livestock-raising industries. Applications are open till May 14, 2023.
